What we do
A-STEP engages sports teams made up of mixed tribes and genders engaging youth on these teams in a structured process to play football and other sporting disciplines, manage conflict, participate in peace dialogues, engage youth to be leaders and examples in their age groups and communities, share information about social struggles and problems such as HIV/AIDS, drugs & alcohol abuse, single headed families, and poverty issues using a Sport's Peace Curriculum, designed and then updated with the help of Grassroots Soccer.
A-STEP Coaches and Team Leaders organize various sports activities (football, athletics, netball, volleyball) as well as music, drama, concerts, dancing and discussions which draw the youth from different communities together, providing an ideal opportunity for public information campaigns on prevention and protection and reaching large numbers of people of different backgrounds, sexes, ages, tribes, countries, nationalities and religions. A-STEP consists of 70 coaches who are coaching youth teams aged under 14 (36 teams), under 17 (14 teams), and over 18 years (16 teams). The youth teams are situated in different parts of Eldoret. There are now about 2000 total participants, ranging in age from under-14 to over-35. Most teams are required to be mixed-ethnicity; exceptions are made for teams from homogenous (usually rural) areas. Participants are about 2/3 male, 1/3 female.
The aim is to empower the youth through Sports:
Accordingly, A-STEP focuses on three cornerstones:
We are currently in the process of constructing the A-STEP Talent Development and Youth Empowerment centre, located in Kakamega County, that will help the youths and Children develop into positive and productive members of the community and provide them with facilities to engage in positive activities such as soccer, volleyball to keep them busy. Simultaneously, these activities will instil discipline in them while keeping them off antisocial or disruptive behaviours. The Talent Development and youth Empowerment Centre will also be a place for the youth to meet positive role models from different backgrounds to emulate. The Centre will help to discover, nurture and expose some of the hidden natural talents the youth possess. The Centre will help build strong leaders through sports and it will have a cross-cultural exchange program and other development-oriented activities that will contribute to holistic development of the youth. All these activities at the centre will foster the spirit of volunteerism, talent excellence and viable gainful engagement in talent-related livelihoods among the youth. The Centre will also be a talent development hub as it aggregates talented youth, identify their talents and redirect them to relevant talent development departments within the centre. The Centre will hence contribute to employment and livelihood creation among the youth.
A-STEP seeks change and uses value-based sports as one of the means to address these issues. A-STEP focuses its program in three main themes.
Education, Health and Life Skills
Here, A-Step endeavours to increase access and completion of basic education for children and youth in A-STEP target school through inter and intra school debates, thematic inter-school value-based sports, life skills training for teachers and pupils, motivational and inspirational talks and training teachers and parents on child protection.
Sports for Development and Social Change
Under this theme, A-STEP tries to Increase opportunities for participation in value-based sports in A-STEP’s target schools and communities through organizing thematic value-based tournaments and interaction games for children and youth in target schools and communities. (Tournaments and Games with Themes like: Education, Health, Gender, Evangelism, Environment, Peace and Conflict Management, etc), training of coaches, referees, and team, and developing value-based sports programs and modules.
Livelihood
Here, A-STEP increases employability and entrepreneurship for youth in contact with the organisation through training children and youths on Computer Skills, entrepreneurship and communication Skills, and organising forums and interactions between the youth and business partners. A-STEP also organizes volunteer and internship opportunities for youths through business partners while establishing linkages with institutions/organizations for employability and entrepreneurship skills for youths
