What we do
A-STEP engages sports teams made up of mixed tribes and genders engaging youth on these teams in a structured process to play football and other sporting disciplines, manage conflict, participate in peace dialogues, engage youth to be leaders and examples in their age groups and communities, share information about social struggles and problems such as HIV/AIDS, drugs & alcohol abuse, single headed families, and poverty issues using a Sport's Peace Curriculum, designed and then updated with the help of Grassroots Soccer.
A-STEP Coaches and Team Leaders organize various sports activities (football, athletics, netball, volleyball) as well as music, drama, concerts, dancing and discussions which draw the youth from different communities together, providing an ideal opportunity for public information campaigns on prevention and protection and reaching large numbers of people of different backgrounds, sexes, ages, tribes, countries, nationalities and religions. A-STEP consists of 70 coaches who are coaching youth teams aged under 14 (36 teams), under 17 (14 teams), and over 18 years (16 teams). The youth teams are situated in different parts of Eldoret. There are now about 2000 total participants, ranging in age from under-14 to over-35. Most teams are required to be mixed-ethnicity; exceptions are made for teams from homogenous (usually rural) areas. Participants are about 2/3 male, 1/3 female.
The aim is to empower the youth through Sports:
