Education program
Motivating children and youth and providing them with the experience of a learning environment through value based sports.
Schools are the traditional backbone of society when it comes to education. Sports has proven to be a great tool for talent development and addressing social issues. This is however, not used in schools at this moment. Games hours are there in theory, but do not serve their purpose in practice. A-STEPs school program will address several social issues like teen pregnancy, substance abuse and women empowerment and help children to develop their talents. It will encourage children to go to, and stay in school and increase interactions with students from other schools and neighborhoods.
A-STEP has implemented several short term school programs. The primary activity of the program is training game teachers in primary schools. The teachers are trained on value based sports, discussions, awareness, sensitization and personal problem identification, counselling and referral.
After the teachers are trained, they are responsible for using the gained skills within their schools. A-STEP remains involved by monitoring the progress, advising and organizing tournaments and playdays for multiple schools to encourage interaction between students of the different schools.
The program encourages school ownership. Before the teachers are trained, they work together with the A-step coordinator of the program. This coordinator only selects motivated and pro-active teachers to be trained. The program minimizes the use of volunteers and has the potential of reaching significant results with minimal efforts, by using the existing structures of the education system.
The first target group were primary schoolchildren and game teachers in Iten and in the areas Illula, Kimumu, Beta Farm, Chabarus, and Munyaka, in Eldoret East. Since 2017, Kakamega County, Mumias East Sub-County has been targetted. Secondary target groups will be the communities of these areas, and the parents of the participants.
The schools will be selected if they meet the following requirements:
