A-STEP will realize these goals through its different activities (see “Our programs”)
Strategies
A-STEP uses the following strategies to meet its goal and aspirations:
Additional goal & strategy
Because of the expertise A-STEP has in this area, external organizations (US-aid, Mercy Corp etc.) have been hiring A-STEP to implement their programs. During the implementation of the program, these “donors” paid for all running costs including staff wages, social benefits, etc.
When a program was ended, the financial support from the donor also ended. This left A-STEP with the challenge of not being able to pay hired staff because of a shortage of income without support from the donor. To realize the goal of becoming an self-sustainable organization, A-STEP needs ongoing Income Generating Activities (IGA) of its own.
In December 2013 a SWOT analyses of the organization was done and a strategy developed from this analyses. Creating an IGA for A-STEP is a major part of this strategy.
The purpose of the IGAs is to contribute to one of the major goals that were set during the restructuring of A-STEP. This goal is to create a self-sustainable and solid organization with committed management & volunteers that is highly valued by the local community. It is contributing to this goal by generating revenue that will be used to invest in the organization.
With economic challenges being faced worldwide, a structure where A-STEP is dependent on donors and sponsors to implement its activities is no longer sustainable. The choice was made to restructure A-STEP to be more business focused and generate income through business oriented activities, besides the financial support of donors. With this new approach, the non-profit organization will be able to perform in a profitable way. These profits will then again be used to invest in the organization and benefit the community.
The construction of the A-STEP House of Talents Centre is part of this strategy and will create incomes in the future.
